August 22-25 Charming Hostess is honored to participate in the Performing Diaspora festival. The other PD fellows are inspiring and seeing their work is transformative. We perform the second weekend but the first weekend crew is stellar—go both weekends! More below.

September 4-5, 13-14 Jewlia is the Cantor-in-Residence for the Aquarian Minyan for the upcoming High Holy Days, and her band includes two ChoHos. Come if you want a groovy, inclusive, spiritual experience with lots of singing. These services are welcome to ALL PEOPLE, they are sliding scale, pay what you can. More below.

August 15 The rare bird Gramophone & Dynamo appears this week with our beloved Jeremiah Lockwood of The Sway Machinery. G&D explores the Salonikan crucible drawing from violent, sexy rebetika and romantic, funny Sephardika. Also Jewlia and Jeremiah will do some songs together from their upcoming “Book of J.”

CounterPULSE presents
Performing Diaspora Weekend Two
Jewlia Eisenberg, Muisi-kongo Malonga, and Nadhi Thekkek
AUG 22-25, THU-SUN at 8PM

Hosted at CounterPULSE (1310 Mission Street, SF)

Performing Diaspora artists represent many of the state’s most exciting new voices at the intersection of traditional arts, contemporary performance and California’s changing demographic. In the second festival weekend, Jewlia Eisenberg, Muisi-kongo Malonga and Nadhi Thekkek excavate their own heritage and push the boundaries of their current practice, exploring themes of resistance, spirituality and love.

The Ginzburg Geography by Jewlia Eisenberg is a performance of radical Jewish song based on the life and work of Italian anti-fascists Natalia and Leone Ginzburg; featuring new music performed by Charming Hostess

Muisi-kongo Malonga - Muisi-kongo Malonga’s Kimpa Vita! is a music, dance and theater narrative told through the dual lens of Congolese and African American cultural arts traditions, exploring the controversial life of Congolese prophet, Mama Kimpa Vita.

The Cloud Messenger by Nadhi Thekkek and Nava Dance Theater is a Bharatanatyam adaptation of the poem, Meghadhootha, by 5th century Indian poet, Kalidasa, showing why love’s journey, though risky, is indeed something beautiful.
