Dear Friends, This is an autumn of collaboration for Charming Hostess! This week we participate in Mike Lai's Sonic Kung Fu. In Mike's words: "This project is a continuation of my investigation of cinematic and performative strategies in Kung Fu genre films. It began from the fact that most sounds we hear in the films are not the actual noise recorded from where the scenes take place--they are added on after the film shoot. I am intrigued by how the contradiction of a realistic action juxtaposed with an artificial sound can create such an authentic and believable experience in my mind. I intent to emphasize the importance of sound effects in filmic experience, while at the same time, noting how the experience is also fabricated. Charming Hostess works as a live chorus here, re-creating fight scenes from the genre by using their vocal cords and body percussion. " Next month features Give a Woman a Lift by choreographer Jo Kreiter and Flyaway Productions. We've been writing and recording scores for Flyway for 15 years already! Our last collaboration with them was a celebration of The Women's Building. In Jo's words: "We perform off-the-ground dances that expose the range and power of female physicality. We experiment with height, speed and gravity, dancing on steel objects that are both architectural and fabricated. We dance at the intersection of socia l justice and acrobatic spectacle. We offer performance as a medium for social commentary and choose projects that advance female empowerment in the public realm. At its core, our work explores the female body– its tumultuous expressions of strength and fragility."
